About Awe:

Awe was started by a young gentlemen named Craig Scheepers. When he came up with the notion to start a clothing label, he was fearful that the public might not take too kind to his idea.

He came up with the idea in June 2010 and with a lot of procrastination it came to a halt. In April 2011 he finally decided to launch his brand, he started with 25 T-shirts and from there the support grew each day and so did his winning attitude.

“So never let anyone tell you its impossible. Believe it and you can achieve it.” The word “Awe” started on the streets and is being used in majority of communities as a slang greeting or as an acknowledgement.

Awe is there to empower our communities and give back to the less fortunate. For every Awe Item purchased 10% gets donated to charity.

“Know Thyself” – What are Life Skills?

Make money from home and have more freedom.

What are Life Skills?

The World Health Organization has defined life skills as, “the abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life”. UNICEF defines life skills as “a behaviour change or behaviour development approach designed to address a balance of three areas: knowledge, attitude and skills”. The UNICEF definition is based on research evidence that suggests that shifts in risk behaviour are unlikely if knowledge, attitudinal and skills based competency are not addressed.

What are the Core Life Skill Strategies and Techniques?

UNICEF, UNESCO and WHO list the ten core life skill strategies and techniques as: problem solving, critical thinking, effective communication skills, decision-making, creative thinking, interpersonal relationship skills, self-awareness building skills, empathy, and coping with stress and emotions. Self-awareness, self-esteem and self-confidence are essential tools for understanding one’s strengths and weaknesses. Consequently, the individual is able to discern available opportunities and prepare to face possible stumbling blocks. This leads to the development of a social awareness of the concerns of one’s family and society. Subsequently, it is achievable to identify problems that arise within both the family and society.

With life skills, one is able to explore alternatives, weigh pros and cons and make rational decisions in solving each problem or issue as it arises. It also entails being able to establish productive interpersonal relationships with others.  Life skills enable effective communication, for example, being able to differentiate between hearing and listening and ensuring that messages are transmitted accurately to avoid miscommunication and misinterpretations.

What are the main components of Life Skills? The World Health Organisation (WHO) categorizes life skills into the following three components:

a) Critical thinking skills/Decision-making skills – include decision-making/ problem solving skills and information gathering skills. The individual must also be skilled at evaluating the future consequences of their present actions and the actions of others. They need to be able to determine alternative solutions and to analyze the influence of their own values and the values of those around them.

b) Interpersonal/Communication skills – include verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, and the ability to express feelings and give feedback. Also in this category, are negotiation/refusal skills and assertiveness skills that directly affect ones’ ability to manage conflict. Empathy, which is the ability to listen and understand others’ needs, is also a key interpersonal skill. Teamwork and the ability to cooperate include expressing respect for those around us. Development of this skill set enables the adolescent to be accepted in society. These skills result in the acceptance of social norms that provide the foundation for adult social behaviour.

c) Coping and self-management skills refer to skills to increase the internal locus of control, so that the individual believes that they can make a difference in the world and affect change. Self esteem, self-awareness, self-evaluation skills and the ability to set goals are also part of the more general category of self-management skills. Anger, grief and anxiety must all be dealt with, and the individual learns to cope loss or trauma. Stress and time management are key, as are positive thinking and relaxation techniques.

Life skills approach can be successful, if the following are undertaken together:

a) The Skills -This involves a group of psychosocial and interpersonal skills (Critical thinking skills/Decision-making skills, Interpersonal/Communication skills, Coping and self-management skills) which are interlinked with each other. For example, decision-making is likely to involve creative and critical thinking components and values analysis.

b) Content – To effectively influence behaviour, skills must be utilized in a particular
content area. “What are we making decisions about?” Learning about decision-making will be more meaningful if the content is relevant and remains constant. Such content areas as described could be drug use, HIV/AIDS/STI prevention, suicide prevention or sexual abuse. Whatever the content area, a balance of three elements needs to be considered: knowledge, attitudes and skills.

c) Methods – Skills-based education cannot occur when there is no interaction among participants. It relies on groups of people to be effective. Interpersonal and psychosocial skills cannot be learned from sitting alone and reading a book. If this
approach is to be successful, all three components, life skills, content and method should be in place. This effectively means that life skills can be learnt through the use of certain methods and tools.

A criterion for using Life Skills UNICEF has identified the following criteria to ensure a successful life skills-based education:

* It should not only address knowledge and attitude change, but, more importantly, behaviour change.

* Traditional “information-based” approaches are generally not sufficient to yield changes in attitudes and behaviours. For example, a lecture on “safe behaviour” will not necessarily lead to the practice of safe behaviour. Therefore, the lecture should be substantiated with exercises and situations where participants can practice safe behaviour and experience its effects. The adult learning theory emphasizes that adults learn best that which they can associate with their experience and practice.

*It will work best when augmented or reinforced. If a message is given once, the brain remembers only 10 percent of it one day later, and when the same message is given six times a day, the brain remembers 90 percent of it. Hence the need to repeat, recap, reinforce and review.

*It will work best if combined with policy development, access to appropriate health services, community development and media.

What does Research say about the Outcomes of Life Skills-Based Education?

Programmes aimed at developing life skills have produced these effects such as Lessened violent behaviour; increased pro -social behaviour and decreased negative, self-destructive behaviour; increased the ability to plan ahead and choose effective solutions to problems; improved self-image, self-awareness, social and emotional adjustment; increased acquisition of knowledge; improved classroom behaviour; gains in self control and handling of interpersonal problems and coping with anxiety; and improved constructive conflict resolution with peers, impulse control and popularity. We think and manage with our head. Resilience, keeping records, making wise use of resources, planning/organizing and goal setting is ‘head’ related managerial functions. Service learning, Critical thinking, problem solving, decision making and learning to learn were related to our thinking processes, which we manage with our head. Functions of the heart are relating to people and caring.

How do we relate to people?

We relate to people by accepting differences, conflict resolutions, social skills, cooperation and communication. The second function we do through our heart is caring. We care through nurturing relationships, sharing, empathy and concern for others. We give and work through our hands. Community service, volunteering, leadership, responsible citizenship and contributions to group effort — are our way giving back to society. We work through our marketable skills, teamwork and self-motivation to get the things done. Living and being comes under the functions of health. Healthy lifestyle choices, stress management, disease prevention and personal safety are our prime concerns for better living. Self-esteem, self-responsibility, character, managing feelings and self-discipline must be practiced without fail for our well-being. In a nutshell, the essence of life skills is to share well, care well and fare well. Life skills are inevitable to become successful in professional life as well as personal life.

DUbturbo – More Than Just A Beat Maker!

DUBturbo -Sick Software to Make Music!

How to make music on a PC with DUBturbo.

In this post I wanted to let you know about DUBturbo Beat Maker that has been getting a huge amount of attention over the last few months, more so now as they have just launched version 1.5 of the Software.

I get a lot of emails asking me what the best way to get started, to make music like rap beats and dance music online and my reply is always the same:

“Invest the time into learning Cubase or Fruity Loops as you will be learning real music production and if you go for anything less than that you will not be able to make high quality tunes!”

Then I started to make music with DUBturbo Beat Maker and this software blows the statement above out of the water.

The reason for this is because DUBturbo gives you everything (minus a few features) that the higher end music production programs give you and it is not just a bar looper. It’s a proper piece of software for you to make music easily.

You get 16 tracks in which to lay down your music. You also get a ton of kits that you can pick from to make pretty much any style of music that you want.

What is different about DUBturbo and brilliant I might add is the fact that you can ‘track out’ properly once you have created your masterpiece and this basically means splitting all of the tracks into separate parts and then if and when you go to sell your beats you will be able to give the purchaser the full track as well as the split parts of audio.

DUBturbo Beat Maker is a must and you will not be able to do this with just some looper. As well as that the other cool thing is that when you make music, you get proper studio quality wave files that you can export directly from DUBturbo Beat Maker.

“For just $47, Cash Siphon members will receive instant access to automated software that generates them their own network of siphon sites to drive huge traffic wherever they please.

PLUS, the software is designed to also give this network of sites ALL the traffic could possibly need. To put it simply, this means they get free traffic using this new killer software which takes allot of time and effort out of internet marketing.

Over the past 12 months I’ve realized that our members want simple yet effective systems for generating income online, but don’t want the hassle of having to master every technical skill before they can get up and running. Hard Reset PC Game

Forget run and cover mechanics, regenerating health, or constantly reloading weapons.  Hard Reset is straight-forward, shoot-anything-that-moves game that harks back to the simplistic days of first person shooters.  This action-packed Hard Reset shooter will test your skills, reflexes, and patience as you run-and-gun your way through a cyberpunk environment destroying everything you see.

Don’t expect much in terms of plot.  Between the mayhem are comic-style drawings that poorly attempt to explain what is going on.  It’s your typical man vs AI story.  Hard Reset takes, what I like to call, “the Michael Bay approach”.  Ridiculous explosions and nonstop action.

Though simplistic in design, Hard Reset is definitely a challenge.  Armed with two bad-ass transforming weapons (more on that later) and an environment filled with explosive barrels, cars, and electronic machinery, you must annihilate hordes of enemy robots as they endlessly swarm from all around.  Don’t expect a second of downtime in Hard Reset.  Lurking behind every corner is a wave of merciless enemy robots waiting to tear you limb from limb.

Please note: The content in this video is not suitable for people younger than 16

Hard Reset successfully combines the nostalgic feel of an old-fashioned shooter with the glorious HD environment of a modern game.  Though fairly linear in design, with only slight room to explore in search of “Secrets”, Bezoar City is as nice to look at as a lifeless, futuristic city overrun by rampaging robots can be.  The city’s sprawling skyscrapers are loaded with art deco styled detail and corporate advertising reminiscent to Blade Runner.  The cluttered streets and tight alleys are littered with abandoned vehicles and run-down architecture defaced with graffiti.

The Hard Reset Gaming environment isn’t without purpose, however.  The futuristic Bezoar City is filled with cold, neon-tech and explosive debris which you must use to your advantage.  Strategically placed cars, machinery, barrels, and boxes can all easily be ignited, sending electric currents and burning shrapnel in all directions.  You can (and definitely will) use the volatile environment to your advantage and take out large numbers of enemies, but one stray bullet could also spell doom for yourself.

As I mentioned earlier, you are armed only with two weapons that transform to meet your needs.  These are the CLG, which uses a more primitive bullet/explosive ammunition, and the N.R.G., which gives off a more futuristic vibe using electricity.  As you earn experience, you can upgrade each weapon enabling it to transform into other configurations like a shotgun, grenade launcher, or mortar.  Eventually, upgrading each weapon further will lead to secondary firing modes like stuns and AOE damage.  In addition to weapon upgrades, you can choose to go with the more passive upgrades, like greater damage resistance or a radar to track the enemies.

Hard Reset Gameplay trailer and debut teaser [HD]
Debut gameplay and teaser trailer plus gameplay recap slo-mo at the end. Hard Reset is a futuristic first-person shooter that isn´t afraid to buck the trends of its modern-day counterparts. This PC exclusive harks back to a time when exploration was necessary and regenerating health was a luxury. The team behind it hails from all across the development landscape, including members from CD Projekt Red (The Witcher 2) and People Can Fly (Bulletstorm). We recently talked with Michal Szustak, CEO of developer Flying Wild Hog, about this upcoming shooter set for release in September. www.gamespot.com royalty free song during slo-mo gameplay : ´Fire Within (Angels Anthem)´ by Grim Shit www.jamendo.com

Those of you from the less-forgiving generation of games will find Hard Reset as a refreshing challenge.  You will often find yourself in small combat areas filled with explosive objects that splash damage or a wayward bullet will easily ignite, resulting in your death.  Or there may be times when you are thrown in the middle of two giant robots with little navigation room, while smaller robots chomp away at your health.  These “cheap” deaths, as they are often referred to, are a testament to the challenges and difficulties we faced when playing old-school games that didn’t coddle it’s players.  Is it sometimes frustrating?  Of course it is.  But when it’s all said and done, and you complete the level, by carefully plodding your movements and strategically blowing up your surroundings, you get that sense of fulfillment and completion that many modern games don’t offer to today’s generation.

The game is not without flaws, however.  Switching weapons is often difficult and they don’t necessarily respond in the timely manner that you need them to.  In a game that depends on quickly equipping the right weapon for the situation I would’ve liked it to switch more quickly.  The textures, while nice from far away, are not as detailed as you’d expect form a modern game.  Lastly, the game is very short (roughly 4-5 hours), but it does have some replay value if you are looking to find all the “secrets” and get a high score for the level.

While Hard Reset is a fun play, it is by no means groundbreaking.  It’s a fun throwback for old-school gamers looking to get their fix of explosions.  It may appear like mindless running and shooting, but there is more strategy involved than that which meets the eye.  The game depends on your reflexes and carefully timed, precise shots to fully maximize the environments destructive potential.

A simple rule to play by: if it moves, shoot it.  The second rule to play by: if it doesn’t move, you should still shoot it because it will probably explode. Hard Reset PC Game Review.

Heart Health and Caring

Heart Health and Caring.

A heart attack strikes at the core of your being, bringing you face to face with your mortality.

Heart diagram with labels in English. Blue com...

Hermann Steyn recalls how his world turned upside down in June 2006, when he was taken ill at a sports event in Pretoria. He dismissed the tightness in his chest, weakness and heavy perspiration as indigestion, but on the advice of a friend stopped at the ER on his way home. Just as well: not only was a heart attack confirmed, but he suffered a second one in the hospital and went into cardiac arrest. It was two days before he regained consciousness.

Having survived a major heart attack, the first response is one of overwhelming gratitude to be alive, says Steyn. But then a host of conflicting emotions crowd in: painful recollections of what happened, fear of having another attack, fear of dying and anxiety about being able to cope with everyday responsibilities.

The support of family and friends in this early phase of adjustment actually promotes healing and helps to stave off depression. It has been noted that patients who aren’t supported during recovery do less well than those who receive consistent care and affection. They are inclined to have an increased risk of angina, depression, reduced mental functioning and a poorer quality of life.

Steyn, who now lives in Somerset West, is chairman of the Helderberg Cardiac Support Group. ‘Every heart attack presents challenges but the causes, symptoms and treatment vary,’ he says. ‘In my case, the cardiologist monitored my progress and only performed by-pass surgery six months later. There’s no standard time line of recovery and no guarantee of what to expect. Patients may experience some, all or none of the following: weakness, fatigue, shortness of breath, swollen legs, anger, anxiety, depression and sleep disturbances.’

Steyn’s involvement with the support group is his way of giving back to the community, in gratitude for the good years he has enjoyed with his family since his heart attack. ‘I found out about heart disease the hard way,’ he says. ‘I’m lucky to be alive, and I’m thankful for the information that has made me take better care of myself. If I can share that, I may help others extend the time they have with their families.’

Understanding Heart Disease
Heart disease affects more than 20 million Americans. Let´s explore the various forms that heart disease can take.

Here are a few Heart Health tips to provide you with some reassurance.

Find out more about the heart condition

There are many different heart conditions. Some people may have conditions linked to coronary artery disease, for example high blood pressure, diabetes or heart failure. Whatever the case may be – find out as much as you can from the  cardiologist.

Deal with stress

Caring for someone with a heart condition can be physically exhausting and emotionally draining. You may be anxious about what will happen in the future and you may feel that the extra pressure is putting a strain on your home and/or work life. This could eventually lead to feelings of frustration, helplessness, depression and being burnt-out. Learn to recognise the symptoms of stress and determine the main cause of the stress so that you can do something about it.

Help reduce the risk of further heart problems

Most of the risk factors for heart disease are related to poor lifestyle choices which can be controlled by focussing on healthier lifestyle habits. To avoid future heart problems, encourage your loved one to make some changes – such as eating a healthy diet, reducing the amount of alcohol consumed, not smoking and being physically active.

Know what to do if someone has a heart attack or cardiac arrest

Learn about the signs of a heart attack so that you know what to do in an emergency.

In the case of a heart attack:

• Get help immediately

• Get the person to sit in a comfortable position

• Phone an ambulance.

Things to Know for Detecting Heart Attack Early.

A Heart attack can affect any individual.

Heart attacks can affect an individual at any point of time regardless of his or her age. If you are aware of the early signs of heart attacks, you will be able to save lives of people encountering heart attacks in front of you and also be able to identify the condition if you are about to suffer from a heart attack. If the patient is taken to the hospital or attended by a doctor in the first hour of encountering a heart attack, his chances of surviving is much more compared to the ones taken to the hospital after several hours of experiencing the condition.

Insufficient-blood-flow-to-heart-muscle

A sudden and intense chest pain may, or may not be a sign of heart attack. If such pain does not indicate heart attacks, it is the symptom of angina. Angina is a condition occurring due to stress, fear or exertion. Pain related to angina begins from the chest’s left side and gradually spreads into the neck, left shoulder, throat and jaw. Generally, pain caused by angina subsides if the patient gets proper rest; doctors might also prescribe nitroglycerine for controlling angina. Angina although is not a sign of heart attack, but it increases ones risk of getting a heart attack significantly.

Usually, during the early stage of a heart attack, the affected individual experiences a mild pain accompanied by discomfort. Most of us tend to ignore these signs. Some individuals, on the other hand, experience a feeling of dizziness. Gradually, the pain starts becoming intense and the patient experiences tightness in his chest. Heart attack might also be indicated by signs like sweating, breathing difficulties, lightheadedness and nausea. Some experience heart attacks that are not indicated by any direct symptom like chest pain. Such people might experience secondary symptoms like lightheadedness, sweating, heartburn and nausea.

Early-stage-of-a-heart-attack

Early-stage-of-a-heart-attack

Individuals experiencing any one or more of the above discussed symptoms should be attended by a doctor immediately. The doctor is the best person for examining the patient’s condition by conducting diagnostic tests like ECG and EKG.

Know what to do if someone has a heart attack or cardiac arrest:

• Get help immediately

• Get the person to sit in a comfortable position

• Phone an ambulance and phone the doctor

If the person is unconscious:

• To find out if the person is conscious, gently shake him/her and loudly call out “are you all right?”

• If there is no response – call for help

• Administer CPR

Support group

A support group may be very helpful for people with a heart condition, as well as for their caregivers and family members. Meeting people who are struggling with similar challenges and sharing ideas or stories can provide encouragement. The Helderberg Cardiac Support Group in Somerset West arrange support group meetings and other events. For more information about meetings, guest speakers and other support services contact Hermann Steyn on Tel 079 508 3519, email cardiac@absamail.co.za or visit www.helderbergcardiac.co.za

Groote Schuur Hospital

1967: The first human-to-human heart transplant is performed.

The operation is a success, but the patient dies after complications set in.

South African surgeon Dr. Christiaan Barnard, who prepared for this day by performing a number of experimental heart transplants involving dogs, led a 30-member surgical team in implanting the heart of a young woman into 53-year-old Louis Washkansky, a Cape Town grocer suffering from diabetes and incurable heart disease.

Washkansky received the heart of Denise Darvall, a 25-year-old bank clerk who was left brain-dead following an automobile accident the day before. She was removed from life support, and her father gave permission for her heart to be given to Washkansky.

The heart transplant, performed at Cape Town’s Groote Schuur Hospital.

The heart transplant, performed at Cape Town’s Groote Schuur Hospital, was a success. Washkansky’s body did not reject the heart, due in large part to the immunosuppressive drugs he received. But those drugs also weakened his immune system, and he contracted double pneumonia, which killed him 18 days after the heart transplant.

Barnard, who became an international celebrity (and reveled in it) as a result of the heart transplant, soldiered on. Over the next several years he performed additional heart transplants, with the survival times for his patients gradually improving. One patient, Dorothy Fisher, survived for 24 years after receiving a heart transplant in 1969.

Other surgeons, however, weren’t as bullish on transplant surgery, because of the high risk of organ rejection by the recipient. It wasn’t until cyclosporine came into widespread use in the early 1980s that an effective means of reducing that risk was found. After that, other organ and heart transplant surgery took off.

Barnard, meanwhile, became more interested in anti-aging research, and his reputation took a hit when he lent his name to Glycel, an anti-aging skin cream that in the end did nothing at all to slow the process. Barnard died in 2001.

FIRST HEART TRANSPLANTATION IN HUE CENTRAL HOSPITAL OF VIETNAM
On March 1st 2011, a human heart was firstly and successfully transplanted for a 27-year-old male patient with end-stage heart failure because of dilated cardiomyopathy in Hue central hospital. This operation started at 10.00 pm on March 1st 2011 and finished at 3.00 am on March 2nd 2011. For this patient, we applied orthotopic heart transplantation with bicaval technique. This is currently a difficult technique as it requires performing 5 anastomoses but the heart graft functions better than other techniques. The other advantages of this technique are to reduce the risk of arrhythmia and atrio-ventricular valve insufficiency after transplantations. This success has given us more perspective to do more heart transplantation for patients in the next time. Please take your attention to specific stages of heart transplantation in our hospital. This is the first time heart transplantation has been done by the medical physicians of Hue Central Hospital. This team were internally and externally educated and trained in accordance with strict and active procedures of heart transplantation. All members are well-trained to their tasks, which shortens duration of operation. The transplatation is successul with a promised team who are able to undertake all mission of a national organ transplantation center in the central region of Vietnam

Once upon a time in a classroom not so far away, in a school not so long ago, there was an official procedure about identification of dyslexia. It went a bit like this: (delete as appropriate) concerned mum/dad/carer/sibling (often defined as over anxious in the staffroom) of a child in reception/year 1/year 2 would book a meeting after school with class teacher/senco/headteacher. They would express their concerns about the lack of progress their son/daughter was making in reading/writing/maths/self image. During this meeting the class teacher/senco/head teacher would often give 5/10/15 minutes of their ‘planning and marking time’ to reassure the often upset/angry/tearful/baffled parent that ‘everything was fine’ and that ‘they were slow developers/a bit lazy/badly behaved/ don’t listen/daydreams/should join the army/postal service/queue’. The parents would take that reassurance/scolding and, since they are not the experts, take the advice and wait to see how they do over the coming year/years/decade. Things may well appear just fine on the surface, they may well be able to keep up with the class and seem to acquire the skills and foundations stones needed for the next level of school. They could very well be sitting around the middle of the class and be bumbling along just fine.

‘you can’t tell if a child has dyslexia until they are 7’.

Dyslexia

Sir Richard Branson's dyslexia made high school very difficult!

Everything may appear fine and any mention of dyslexia being the root cause was normally quashed with the party line ‘you can’t tell if a child has dyslexia until they are 7’. In other words go away and wait until your child is really in need of help when all their self esteem and joy of school has been squeezed out of them/refusing to go to school/wetting the bed/throwing chairs across the classroom. If they are lucky, they are referred for tests to see if there is some sort of problem, a short report is written that is largely ignored by their teacher. The child can then generally swim around the bottom of the class where earlier labels stick that much harder. The outlook can be bleak. Hopefully they may be good at something at school like art, sport or music and may excel in this arena and make life bearable but if they are not, or the school misses it, an almost life sentence can be past on the child. Of course, schools are no longer like that, and if they are, shame on them. Yet, how do we identify problems early on in order to get a different outcome? I recently spoke to one mother who knew her daughter was very dyslexic but apparently, according to the school, was learning to read. The defining moment came when, at 7 years old, the child was reading her class book out loud word perfect, holding the book at arms length with the words facing her mum, who sat opposite. She had a very good memory for all the books that were read to her, but she could not read. There is a difference.

Dyslexic brains have certain characteristics.

As a class teacher, you can easily concentrate on the children who are easy to identify and who can display much more pronounced or obvious needs, however a bit of investigation may well show up some interesting findings and avert disaster. I think the way to do it is not to think about dyslexia as simply a reading and writing issue, but more as an information processing and outputs issue. That way we are looking for the signs at an age appropriate/task level. Think about it, if we define dyslexia as just the inability to acquire the skills for reading then, of course, we can not pick anyone up until after they should be reading independently and fluently, in other words aged about 7 or 8. But the inability to read is an effect of dyslexia not causal. One of the reasons why children fail to learn how to read, despite developing a very numb bum sitting through endless extra reading lessons, is because they have a brain that works differently (not worse) and dyslexic brains have certain characteristics:

  • Poor or underdeveloped phonological skills
  • Medical issues (e.g glue ear)
  • Trouble tying shoes
  • Orientation confusion
  • Late to establish a dominant hand
  • Sequencing problems (especially the ABC)

If they show two or three of these signs it needs to be looked into more thoroughly. Talk to parents, ask questions”

  • Did they, or do they have lots of ear infections? – glue ear cuts out all the high frequencies and since most primary school teachers are female much of the sound definition can be lost to them, based on the assumption that female teachers have high pitched voices.
  • Do they find it hard to dress themselves? Tie their shoes?
  • Do they switch from their right hand to their left while colouring, writing, or doing any other task?
  • Do they have difficulty learning the names of letters or sounds in the alphabet? Do they have difficulty writing the alphabet in order or saying the days of the week?
  • How good is their phonological awareness? Phono what?

I like to think of it like building an Airfix model (something I was never good at).

  1. You have to find the right bit of grey plastic. Identification of sounds Can they match the same sounds in a pair of words? Identify rhyming words? Count the number of sounds in a word? Are they able to do it at pace?
  2. You have to put said piece of grey plastic and get your fingers to put it in the right place. Sound manipulation. Can they segment sound units within a word? Add, take away and substitution of sounds?
  3. Is the rear gunner in the right place and is it going to stay on. Blending. Can they put words together? This I think is the hardest and requires the most amount of integration and co-ordination of eyes, ears, brain and mouth.

All of these skills can either be tested informally or you can use one of the many tests around (I prefer the PhAB since it has it all in one place and gives standardised scores from 6)

Dyslexia – What are the markers in early years education?

  • When did they start talking? Often, dyslexics don’t start talking until they are two, two-and-a-half, three, or even older. Apocryphally, Winston Churchill’s first words at 4 were “would you be so kind as to pass the condiments.”
  • Do they mix up their sounds? Spaghetti becomes bisghetti, hangaberg is a meal with chips.
  • Do they have a stutter or clutter (Cluttering involves excessive breaks in the normal flow of speech)?

They can often have immature speech, they may say “wed and gween” instead of “red and green” in years 2 and 3.

They may well have been identified by health visitors and be in the NHS system and work with Speech and Language therapists already. If so work with them, if not refer them.

Remediation
Think, same message different medium, remember to keep it fun, play lots of games but tweak and adapt them.

Syllable games
Syllable count – say the word (eg. Smarty pants), then use counters or toys to count the syllables (smar/ty/pants).
I’m thinking of someone..can you finish the name or word Lou … (Louise), This could be a good time to introduce some makaton signs.

Make compound words up using pictures. (sea-sick)

Sounds in words games
I spy initial sounds, end sounds, medial sounds, in that order from pictures and items in the classroom, bingo, sound swap – this can be great to give children one sound to be and then see if they can make words by standing in threes and then changing the sounds – it can also help with blending – don’t do this one at ten past 3 though…

Rhyme games
Picture or object rhyme games, “Can I have the object that rhymes with”
Odd word out, cat, bat, man, rat.

You can adapt games like twister and there are lots of pelmanism games on the market.

Sound differentiation
Evidence suggests that if children with dyslexia play a musical instrument or sing, it helps to build the listening and attention skills they need in a classroom that they find difficult to acquire in a formal setting. There are lots of sound CD’s you could get hold of to make a game of sound bingo. Try getting hold of some old 35mm film tubs and in pairs, fill them with different shaker material. See if the children can find their partner from the sounds – its best to fill two with lentils, two with chick peas, two with marbles and two with something metal so the sounds are very different.

There is no quick fix for dyslexia and I would recommend that children have one to one lessons outside school by a properly trained dyslexic tutor, this includes a proper screening test when and where it is appropriate. Patience is needed in enormous quantities when dealing with dyslexia.
